A new fact has emerged in the corruption case involving former Nigerian Oil Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Her ex-husband, Chief Alison Madueke, on Monday filed a motion with the Federal High Court in Lagos asking that he be restrained from using her name in further legal proceedings related to the case.
Diezani Alison-Madueke is facing $153 million in money laundering charges. She is accused of amassing vast wealth through corrupt practices during her time as a minister. While she is out of the country, authorities are working to recover assets allegedly linked to her.
The husband asked the court to order the former Minister of Petroleum Resources to return to using her maiden name, Agama.
This is stated in Madueke’s application for marriage registration (a statement that the marriage bond has ended).
The former Navy Chief of Staff argued that Diezani’s continued use of his name despite the legal end of their marriage was damaging to his reputation and could result in unintended consequences, including liability, especially given the corruption allegations against him.
Madueke is a former military governor of Anambra and Imo states. He married Diezani on June 30, 1999, under the Marriage Act.
The petitioner, Madueke, noted that Diezani had earlier filed for divorce at the Nassarawa State High Court in Mararaba Gurku in November 2021, citing irreconcilable breakdown in their marriage, and seeking to formally end their union.
He said he did not oppose the lawsuit, which resulted in the dissolution of the marriage by the court, but Diezani insisted on using his last name, even though their marriage had officially ended.

Chief Madueke’s legal team argued that his ex-wife was trying to deflect blame and public scrutiny by linking her to his alleged crimes.
He stated, βOn April 13, 2022, a judgment was rendered in Suit No. NSD/MG345/2021 by Judge AA Ozegya dissolving the marriage between the petitioner and the respondent on the grounds that the marriage had broken down beyond repair.
βThe dissolution of the marriage has now become absolute due to the enactment of the law.
βAlthough the marriage has been dissolved and is now legally valid, the respondent continues to use the applicant’s first name (Alison) and last name (Madueke) as his own without any justification or consent from the applicant.
βFor more than two years the defendant has continued to use the applicant’s name to embarrass him.
βThe respondentβs continued use of the applicantβs first and last names gives the public the mistaken impression of a continuing relationship between the parties, even though the relationship has legally ended.
βThe respondentβs continued use of the applicantβs first name and surname poses a significant risk of legal and financial loss to the applicant.
βThe applicant requests the honorable Court to restrain the respondent from using his first and last name further, thereby preserving his image, personality and reputation.β
