The Federal Government has revealed plans to start the Decarbonization of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The air and aerospace development minister Festus Keyamo said that the challenges posed by climate changes require a decisive and concerted action by the parties concerned to embrace the decarbonisation.
Keyamo, who was represented on Tuesday by the permanent secretary of the Ministry, dr. Ibrahim Kana, revealed it to the commitment of the parties concerned on the management of carbon emissions in Abuja, suggested to explore the electrification group of aprons and terminals, sustainable aviation corridors (SAF) and height projects to reduce emissions in airport operations.
The minister said that the global aviation community is found in a crossroads.
“On the one hand, we are drivers of economic growth, connectivity and national development. On the other, we are required to face our environmental impact with the utmost seriousness.
“The challenge of climate change is not a distant theoretical concern; it is a present and urgent reality that requires decisive and concerted actions. For Nigeria, a nation ready for exponential growth in travel and in the air trade, incorporating sustainability into the nucleus of our aeronautical infrastructure is not an option, it is a long -term imperative, the prosperity reassens,” he said.
The director of human resources and administration of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (Faan), dr. Luqman Eniola, said Faan is committed to decarbonizing his operations through the implementation of strategic measures.
He said that the Aca Faan team and the Carbon emissions reduction committee carried out the mapping to Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Enugu and Port Harcourt, noting that electricity consumption represented about 90 % of the total emissions for Lagos airport from 2017 to 2023.
He said that the implementation of the emissions reduction measures for Lagos airport began, adding that more actions will be taken into consideration in the reconstruction and expansion of the airport terminal buildings.
