FG justifies ₦ 10 billion of ASO Rock Solar Project, cites ₦ 47 billion of annual power bills

On Friday, the federal government defended its decision to install a 10 billion solar energy system in the presidential villa Aso Rock, citing the annual electricity invoice ₦ 47 billion ₦ as a key motivation.

The general manager of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, revealed him while he was addressed to journalists in Abuja.

He said the move was part of the efforts to reduce governance costs and align with the agenda of the transition for clean energy of President Bola Tinubu.

“This initiative will not only guarantee an uninterrupted power supply to the villa, but will also drastically reduce dependence on the national network, will promote innovation and create jobs for Nigerian engineers and energy professionals,” said Abdullahi.

The announcement comes months after the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has published a list of indebted government institutions.

In a public notice entitled “NOTICE OF DISCONNESSION”, AEDC revealed that the only presidential villa was to ₦ 923.87 million in unpaid electrical invoices. He also issued a 10 -day disconnection ultimatum to 86 ministries, departments and agencies (MDA) on a combined debt of ₦ 47.1 billion.

Abdullahi has declared that solar installation at the Power headquarters marks a fundamental shift towards energy diversification in public institutions and sends a strong signal on the commitment of the administration against sustainable energy solutions.

The move will be expected to reduce the burden of the electricity of the villa, positioning it as a model for other government institutions that face similar challenges on power costs.
