FIFA World Cup 2026: Apart from Ademola Lookman, two key Benin stars left out of crucial Nigeria-Benin qualifier

Ademola Lookman and two key Benin Republic players will miss the must-win match between Nigeria and Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash on Tuesday in Uyo.

The Atalanta striker received a yellow card in the 63rd minute of Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho in Polokwane after fouling Fusi Matlabe.

The warning, his second of the campaign, leaves him out of the decisive Group C match due to suspension.

Lookman’s absence is a major setback for the Super Eagles, who must secure three points to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The winger has been one of Nigeria’s most reliable attacking options, contributing goals and assists in recent games.

Super Eagles coach Eric Sekou Chelle is expected to alter his tactical selection of players as Fulham’s Samuel Chukwueze or Akor Adams may have a place in the starting line-up when they face Benin Republic on Tuesday.

Benin Republic, however, will not be in top form either.

The Cheetahs will be missing two key players in Yohan Roche and Sessi D’Almeida, both of whom have been suspended for the clash in Uyo.

Coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that the defender and defensive midfielder received bookings during the 1-0 win over Rwanda, ruling them out of the match against Nigeria.

With Nigeria, Benin Republic and South Africa still competing for the top spot in Group C, Tuesday’s match promises to be an intense battle that could decide who is closest to securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
