Finland confirms IPOB fugitive Simon Ekpa to court over Biafra protests

Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonenon said on Tuesday that her country had taken Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Simon Ekpa to court over his secessionist agitation.

Ekpa has been declared a fugitive by the Nigerian government for his actions for the Republic of Biafra which have resulted in violence in the Southeast region.

The fugitive has been relentless in enforcing the stay-at-home order in the Southeast despite opposition from IPOB and leaders in the region.

Security agents arrested him in the Nordic country in February. Finland confirmed Simon Ekpa in court in 2023 but was later released.

Although less popular among the South-East community, Ekpa is active on social media to promote the Biafran agenda.

Valtonen, who was speaking at a joint press conference with other foreign ministers from Northern Europe, said the fugitive was brought to justice after the Nigerian government reported his activities to its Finnish counterpart.

Foreign ministers from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are in Nigeria to boost trade ties between the countries.
