First Lady Oluremi Tinubu advocates for constitutional change for gender equality in Nigerian politics

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on political leaders across Nigeria to take concrete steps towards achieving gender equality in politics, stressing the need for legislative support.

Speaking at a major initiative of the ECOWAS Women Parliamentarians Association at the Alternate Chamber of the Senate, National Assembly, Abuja on Monday, Tinubu commended the House for advancing a bill to reserve 70 of the 360 legislative seats for women.

“There is a critical need to address and overcome the persistent gender gap in our political system. To fully achieve this, we must commit to action, not just words,” Tinubu said.

He highlighted the All Progressives Congress (APC) efforts to increase women’s participation by removing financial barriers through free nomination forms at the grassroots level.

β€œAfter years of advocacy with inadequate results, enforceable legal action may be necessary to change the status quo,” he added.

β€œWhile quotas and education are important, enforcement mechanisms are equally important. The government must build a strong framework to ensure compliance with gender quotas, including legal provisions and monitoring systems that hold political parties accountable.”

Tinubu proposed a constitutional amendment to institutionalize gender equality in political representation, asserting that the amendment would provide a strong legal basis to ensure adequate representation of women.

β€œThe journey towards achieving 30% female representation in our parliament can be achieved if we start taking steps towards democracy marked by inclusive representation,” Tinubu stressed.

He praised the House for their proactive stance in supporting gender equality and called on the Senate to provide similar support.

β€œNigerian women have the intelligence and ability to collaborate harmoniously with their male counterparts for the progress and development of the nation,” Tinubu concluded.
