Floods have killed 16 people and destroyed 3,936 houses in Jigawa State.
Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Haruna Mariga, who disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday, said the floods also inundated 2,744 hectares of farmland following heavy rains since the start of the 2024 rainy season.
He added that the disaster affected 10 local government areas of the state.
Mairiga said the deaths were due to building collapses, drownings and canoeing accidents in the state.
He said: “This disaster resulted in 16 people dying, 3,936 people being displaced, and 2,744 hectares of agricultural land being submerged.”
The SEMA chief warned that the situation could escalate due to heavy rainfall in many parts of the state.
Mairiga said the agency had provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials to the displaced to ease their suffering.
He listed the items as rice, corn, blankets, pasta and mats.
