For the record: the full text of Tinubu’s speech in the Special FEC session for Buhari

Today, we gather under a heavy shadow, withdrawn from the silence that surrounds a leader who has gone and the great burden of life that is absent will be felt for several generations.

We met in honor of a man whose presence had ordered this room, whose voice had ever called the best in the US, and whose beliefs never bowed, even for the strong winds of public opinion.

The President of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former head of state and former President of the Republic of Federal Nigeria, has been resting.

He was the first among the army in the war, first among citizens in peace, and first, without ambition or flattery, in the hearts of fellow citizens.

But in a calm setting and without decoration from his personal life, his great greatness was revealed: Saleh without a show, only without cruelty, humane without sentimentality, climates without cold, and sincere without deception.

Steady in posture and enthusiasm, dignified in carrying, and governing with his presence, his example guides everyone who meets him. Still, it survived.

For his friends, he is respectful and without being used. For those who served under him, he was good without demeaning.

And, for those he loves the most, he is very gentle, loyal, and good. His life is a reprimand for crime and protection for virtue. The purity of his personal character gives radiance to the discipline and integrity of his public services.

Even in death, he maintains the calm that defines it in life: not a sigh, not a groan, only a calm submission for God’s will. That’s how Nigerian men have disappeared. That’s the person who is now mourning our nation.

The life of President Buhari is one of the harsh honors. He stands, always, ramrod straight; Not moved by the temptation of power, not dedicated by applause and not afraid of the loneliness that often visits those who do what is right, rather than what is popular.

His courage is calm, the truth that never announced himself. Patriotism is more in action than in words -word.

His life tracked Nigeria’s arc. Born before independence, he became a young soldier in the struggle to keep our nation intact. In war and in peace, he served with vigilance and determination, as if the task of overseeing Nigeria had been assigned to him alone.

From the battlefield to the corridor of power, he remains loyal to the task. He ruled the northeast state and stood as head of state.

Years later, he returned to lead oil guard funds, which he did with Spartan rigidity and full loyalty to the public’s goodness.

However, with everything he has achieved, his most eternal inheritance will be carved in democracy. In the time when many people lost hope that change might occur, Muhammadu Buhari put trust in the people in this country.

We stood together, he and me. Together with other people who were withdrawn from all political, territory and language spectrums, we formed an alliance that allowed Nigeria to experience the first true democratic transfer from one party that ruling to another.

When he was appointed as the first elected president of our party, he led with restraint, governed by dignity, and bears the burden of leadership without complaints.

Those who know him the most understand that the elevated office authority never changed it. In the face of pressure, he remained calm. In dealing with the crisis, he remained firm. In front of victory, he remained simple. The most extraordinary, he maintains his cheerful spirit.

When his term of office ended, he returned to Daura; Not to order from the shadows or to hold the court, but to live as he always has, never try to force his will but is satisfied to let others bring the nation forward.

President Buhari is not a perfect person – there is no leader – but he, in everything, good person, good man, a honorable man.

His notes will be debated, such as all inheritance, but the characters he brought to public life, the moral power he brought, the standard that could not be falsified he represented, would not be forgotten. His life lives in full service to Nigeria, and in loyalty to God.

Now, he rests. And those of us who still have to bring their life memories as a standard to guide us. Let us respect him not only with words, but with humility in power, discipline in service, compassion in government, and courage in pursuing justice.

On Tuesday, July 1525, a grateful nation said goodbye to one of his most famous sons. It was a great honor for me, together with Vice President Kashim Shettima, to lead his funeral procession to Daura and witness his burial in a dignified manner in accordance with a great and noble leader.

I am grateful to the Inter-Miners Committee, led by the Federation Government Secretary, George Akume, and Governor of Dikko Radda, for regulating the appropriate state funeral within 48 hours.

In this national condolence period, I once again expressed his sincere condolences to Hajia Aisha Buhari, his children, the whole family of Buhari, the government and people in the state of Katsina, and all who knew and loved him.

Gratitude we will remain with the family members of the President of Buhari who gives him comfort and strength to serve our nation in various capacities for more than 50 years of public service.

We respect his service, reflect on his inheritance, and pray for a peaceful rest from his soul.

Mai Gaskkiya, People’s General, Farmer President – Your task is complete.

May Allah the Almighty forgive his shortcomings and give him Aljannah Firdaus.

Hopefully his life continues to inspire the Nigerian generation to serve with courage, beliefs, and innocence.
