Foreign diplomacy: Tongar tasks media organizations on strategic commitment to combat disinformation

Abuja (basic reporter) annoyed by the challenges posed to the company by disinformation, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, commissioned Nigerian journalists and the media organizations to adopt a more strategic and proactive approach to communication, in particular in the context of national security and foreign diplomacy.

Ambassador Tuggar made the call to Abuja on Wednesday 23 July 2025, declaring the Maiden International Conference open on diplomacy and security organized by the association of Nigeria (Dican) diplomats.

The conference brought together the main parties of the diplomatic community, the safety, academic world and media sector to discuss threats of global security, strategic diplomacy and the growing challenge of disinformation in the digital era.

Represented by his special media assistant and on the strategy, Alkassim Abdulkadir, the minister stressed that responses to reactive media are no longer sufficient in an era in which the disinformation and geopolitical propaganda model global narratives.

“Nigeria remains committed to supporting all the significant initiatives that try to combat disinformation and improve the integrity of the information space,” said Tuggar. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recognizes the crucial role of the media in modeling the perceptions and advance the country’s diplomatic objectives. This is why we are open to continuous collaboration with Dican to promote professionalism, factual relationships and the development of skills for the diplomats.”

He observed that the investments deliberated in strategic communication would not only strengthen the image of Nigeria internationally, but would also favor the trust between citizens, development partners and diplomatic community.

The Dican conference, which marks a significant step in the institutionalization of the dialogue between journalists, diplomats and security experts, has characterized paper presentations and high -level panel discussions on topics ranging from global conflicts trends to the role of diplomacy in the mitigation of hybrid threats.

The conference ended with a request for institutionalization of media-diplomatic involvement platforms, joint formation and a task force control of the facts to deal with the manipulation of information that threaten national and international peace.
