Former Bayelsa gubernatorial candidate LP, Eradiri congratulates Diri, advises against witch hunting

Udengs Eradiri, a former governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Bayelsa State, has congratulated Governor Douye Diri after the Supreme Court confirmed Diri’s election.

Eradiri, a former president of the Ijaw Youth Congress, urged the governor to show magnanimity in victory and resist the urge to marginalize his political opponents.

In a statement released on Monday, Eradiri acknowledged that all legal processes have been completed with the Supreme Court’s ruling and called on all stakeholders to cooperate with Diri for the progress of the country. Despite challenging Diri’s victory to the Court of Appeal and choosing not to pursue the case, Eradiri promised to provide constructive criticism rather than engage in partisan conflict.

“All parties involved in the last general election fought well. All legal challenges have now been resolved with the final judgment of the Supreme Court confirming the election of Governor Douye Diri. My team and I congratulate our state governor on his victory,” Eradiri said.

He stressed the importance of unity and warned against bitterness, saying, “Now is the time for all stakeholders in the state to come together and work with the governor to move the state forward. There should be no room for politics of bitterness, and we also urge the governor to be magnanimous in victory.”

Eradiri also advised against any form of political retaliation, and urged Diri to focus on governance seriously. “We appeal to Governor Douye Diri to unite the country and avoid the temptation to eliminate perceived enemies in the governance of the country. The governor must approach the issue of governance with the seriousness that is needed.”

Addressing the state’s development issues, he said, “Bayelsa is still very underdeveloped despite our vast resources, and we urge the governor to wisely utilize the vast Commonwealth to address Bayelsa’s fundamental development challenges.”

He concluded, “We will continue to engage the governor on his policies and programmes, his actions and inactions, and constructively criticize issues related to the development, growth and progress of Bayelsa State. This is the only state we have, and we must all contribute our share to its development.”
