From the red card to the hot shape: the star of the Super Falcons Deborah Abiodun speaks in the World Cup, the Dallas movement

Deborah Abiodun, one of the most brilliant midfield talents in Nigeria, has opened on his trip from base football in Nigeria to the United States NWSL, his unforgettable experience in the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup and an unexpected passion out of the game: Djing.

The Super Falcons star, currently lent in Dallas Trinity of Washington Spirit, spoke with Sports Radio Brila FM in an exclusive interview, where he reflected on his rapid increase in the game.

“Kante” and Nigerian dream

Abiodun, called “Kante” for Nigerian fans due to their energetic and combative style in the midfield, admitted that his trip has been no less than surreal.

“Yes, it has been a very wonderful trip completely,” he said.

“From Amazonas Nasarawa to Rivers Angels, then to Pittsburgh, Washington Spirit and now Dallas Trinity.”

“I simply look privileged to go through these incredible routes. Each step has been a blessing.”

Despite his success, Abiodun declared that it was not an easy path, accrediting his faith and his family for his support.

“First I owe God. Then my brother, was my first coach. When I grew up, I played mainly with masculine teammates, and I think that shaped the player I am today.”

World Cup red card pain

One of the most unforgettable moments in Abiodun’s career occurred during the Nigeria inaugural match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup against Canada.

The 19 -year -old received a red card for a high Tackle about Ashley Lawrence, forcing Miss Nigeria in the next two games.

“It was heartbreaking. Upon entering the costumes, my greatest fear was that we granted because I knew how much effort the team had put in that game. I would have blamed me if that happened,” he confessed.

However, he expressed immense gratitude to his teammates for keeping Canada to a goals without goals despite playing with 10 women.

“The whole team supported me. The coaches were there for me. And when I returned, I was determined to contribute in any way I could.”

Dallas Trinity: a new chapter in his career

The current Abiodun club, Dallas Trinity, is a new team in the NWSL, but has quickly established.

“It has been incredible. For me, football teams are not just teams; they are familiar,” he said.

“See you every day, we eat together, train together. The link is very important.”

Despite her young age, Abiodun has already played for Nigeria both in the World Cup and in the Olympic Games, something she describes as a dream come true.

“I look at the last three years and I only smile. From the U-20 World Cup to the Senior World Cup, and then play at the Olympic Games. It has been fast, but I love the challenge.”

Beyond football: the bullshit side

Surprisingly, Abiodun revealed that he has a passion beyond football, Music.

“I’m really a DJ next to you,” he said, laughing.

“I love music! If I weren’t playing football, I would still be in sports, perhaps as a broader or even full -time music.”

When the interviewer joked about her potentially taking her job, she played: “I only be careful, you know. Be careful for me.”
