Last Wednesday, a coalition of women’s demonstrators under the umbrella of the rivers that women unite the prayer group reiterated the immediate ending question to the emergency domain in the state and the restoration of the governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Dresses in red clothing, women marched on the streets of Port Harcourt, singing solidarity songs in support of the suspended governor and showing signs with different instructions, such as “#bringbackfubara #riverswomenunitheforsim”, “We are gag”, “Ibas, what is your agenda in the threads”, etc.
Highlighting their requests in a declaration signed jointly by dr. Nancy Chidi Nwankwo and dr. Vivian Ige-Lelenwo on behalf of the group, requested among others; The immediate removal of the police commissioner of the State of Rivers, CP Olugbenga AppePoju; aim for the emergency rule; Restoration of all democratic institutions, including the restoration of the governor Fubara.
The declaration entitled “The women of the rivers remain resolved in asking for the end of the emergency rule in the state of sparrows”, reads:
“Once again, and for the umpteenth time, we, the women of the rivers, the state under the umbrella of the women of the rivers combine the prayer group, we strongly reiterate our constant demand for immediate interruption of the unconstitutional and unjust emergency rule imposed on our dear state.
“The continuous actions of the only administrator imposed, the deputy admiral IBOK-ETE IBAS (RTD), have clearly exposed the further and politically motivated intentions behind this so-called emergency rule.
“Almost a month after taking control, rather than promoting reconciliation between the political parties, the deputy admiral Ibas deepened the division. His actions for the dismantling of democratic institutions and orchestral policies aimed at reaching political domination only the interests of those who have appointed him are used.
“We, the women of the state of rivers, firmly reject any attempt to suffocate the voices of our people or frustrate the legitimate dissent. We condicate the dictatorial trends of the deputy admiral IBOK-ETE IBAS and the commissioner for the Police of Rivers in strong terms. The police have responded forcefully, deploying tear gas and brute intimidation in the attempt to silence our democratic law peaceful.
“Yet, on Monday 14 April 2025, according to reports, the same deputy admiral Ibas sponsored a counterprootest, assuming criminals to disguise himself from women rivers in support of the illegal emergency state, a law that was shamefully protected by the same police commissioner who had previously burned the women of wires for peace.
“This deliberate provocation and double standard is to say the least sabotage and the crushing of democratic rights.
“The economic impact of this poorly conceived emergency rule is already evident. Companies are closing, planned investments are transferred and the state economy is in free fall.
“As always, they are our women and children who have the weight of this upheaval and economic difficulties.
“We invite all the Nigerians of consciousness, the groups of civil society and in particular the national assembly, to continue speaking against this impunement and act urgently to reverse this deeply unpopular decision. It is disturbing to note that in many truly volatile regions of Nigeria, in which the communities are suspended for security, in which the communities were suspended for the government or the desperate for the government, the dispersed for the government. Government, the desperate has been suspended for the government or desperate for the government, the safety of sectioning.
“Yet, in the state of sparrows, over 10,000 police people and countless military agents were lined up, not for security, but for political intimidation pursuant to the Guise of Emergency Rule.
“Just this Monday, the women who protested against the emergency rule in Mbiama were again carbonated and brutalized, while another group of women who sang praise of the emergency rule were shielded and escorted by the police. This selective protection of the Sicofanti while repressing authentic rumors of concern is serious injustice.
“Therefore, we ask for the following, without misunderstanding:
1. The immediate removal of the Police Commissioner of the State of Rivers, CP Olugbenga Adipoju.
2. An urgent and total end to the illegal emergency state imposed on the state of the rivers.

“Our beloved nation is dangerously reduced to becoming a banana republic. This descent must be interrupted and Nigeria must be saved from political tyranny and systemic impunity.
“Finally, we invite the international community to take a firm position, to intervene diplomatically and to prevail over the Nigerian government to restore democracy and protect the rights and dignity of the people of the State of the rivers.
