The High Federal Court sitting in Abuja has forbidden all the parties in the current legal dispute between the president of the Senate Godswill Akpabio and suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Auduaghan to speak to the media or make public comments regarding the case.
The judge Binta Nyako, who is now chairing the matter, issued the Bavaglio order on Friday following complaints by the Akpabio consultant, Kehinde Ogunwumiju (San), who attracted the attention of the court on a series of media interviews granted by Akpoti-Undughan in contrast.
In a short sentence, judge Nyako directed that “all the parties and their lawyers are detained by the granting of any press interviews relating to the topic of this case”. He also prohibited the streaming of social media procedures, putting a narrow lid on public comments while the court considers the substance of the case.
The tensions inflamed themselves during the Pleny Senate on February 20 when a dispute on the seats triggered a clash between Akpoti-Auduaghan and the president of the Senate Akpabio. The central senator of Kogi, who was visibly discontent for the transfer of his seat, subsequently accused Akpabio of long -standing sexual harassment, supporting his hostility towards him, derived from his refusal to entertain his progress.
Shortly thereafter, Akpoti-Auduaghan was suspended from the Senate for six months following a recommendation by the Ethics Committee, the Senate’s privileges and public petitions, which declared her guilty of misconduct and violation of the rules of the Senate.
Subsequently, he approached the Court to prevent the Committee from starting or continuing the disciplinary proceedings against her. The judge Obiora Egwuatu initially granted a provisional order that stopped the trial on March 4, but later left the order on March 19th after the Akpabio legal team questioned the jurisdiction of the Court for legislative affairs.
The judge Egwuatu later retired from the case on March 25 after Akpabio raised concerns about his neutrality. Since then the question has been reassigned to judge Binta Nyako by the chief judge of the Federal High Court, judge John Tsoho.
The case continues.
