In a bold move to encourage basic sporting development and youth Empowerment in northern Nigeria, Thursday the Gbam Foundation revealed the inaugural edition of its inter-room basketball tournament in Kaduna, with over n1.5 million money for the prizes for the winners in the male and female categories.
The tournament, which will take place from 26 May to 7 June in the iconic Murtala Mohammed Square, will present teams from all 23 areas of the local government of the state of Kaduna.
The founder and CEO of the Gbam Foundation, Murpheus Major Idoko, during a press conference in Kaduna, revealed on Friday that registration is free, with further financial subsidies provided to the teams participating in the logistical cushions.
Murpheus added that the initiative is designed to institutionalize a sustainable basketball structure in Kaduna and gradually extend it throughout Nigeria.
According to him, the overall winner in the male category will clinical N1 million, while the female champions will receive N500,000.
“The idea is to look towards the inside and build what really resonates with young people: sports, entertainment and expression,” said Idoko.
“Gbam stands for graffiti, basketball, art and music. Since 2019, we have authorized men, women, people with disabilities and school children. This year we are redefining that vision starting from the base, with LGA in the center of the scene.”
He praised the company sponsors and MDA of the government, including Kaduna Internal Revenue Service, Zenith Bank, Pay Kaduna, among others to support the initiative.
The structure of the competition will follow the senator areas of Kaduna, with LGA competing within their regions before advanced to the final stages.
The head of the technician, Daniel Jonah, observed that the workshop will be managed by state referees and classified at national level, including an official recently ranked by Malaysia, guaranteeing the best global practices.
Grace John, head of the Gbam Academy, underlined the commitment of the Foundation for gender inclusion, announcing a zonal -based female tournament this year.
“We are collaborating with foundations focused on girls to merge sports with education and empowerment,” he said.
The creative director, Didam Illiya, said that music and art performances will complete basketball games, in an attempt to create an engaging festival for young people. “Sport and entertainment go hand in hand; keeps young people committed positively and out of the streets,” he added.
With the growing concerns about the slope of youth and the abuse of drugs in northern Nigeria, the Gbam Inter-Lga tournament could offer a project for the commitment of the community and the discovery of talents led by sport, creating a model to emulate other states.
