The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has said that the ongoing operations against crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region are achieving their intended objectives as indicated by the increase in terminal factor.
According to the acting deputy director of public affairs of the 6th Army Division, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Major General Abdussalam said that the division would maintain this progress.
He spoke during a courtesy call on Major General Jamil Sarham (retd), Managing Director, New Guard Security and Consultancy Services Limited, at the divisional headquarters in Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers State.
He said the government has set a target of increasing daily oil production to 2 million barrels per day, a target he stressed must be achieved.
He stressed that the Division is fully committed to this mandate and has launched several operations to ensure its achievement.
“We started with Operation CHANNEL SWEEP around the Imo River, effectively managing over 20 million litres of stolen crude oil,” he said.
He also mentioned Operation LINES SWEEP, aimed at clearing critical areas of the Trans Niger pipelines, where several illegal links were detected and dismantled and illegal products were seized.
The GOC reported ongoing operations in the Division’s area of responsibility, including the destruction of illegal artisanal refineries, the confiscation of stolen products, and numerous arrests.
He stressed that Operation RIVER SHIELD is currently underway along the Imo River, in parallel with Operation CRUDE HUNT, and that both are recording significant successes.
He credited the Division’s improved operations to the cooperation of private security companies (PSCs) and local community intelligence.
However, he warned against complacency, stressing the need to weed out “bad apples” to sustain progress.
During the visit, Major General Sarham praised the efforts of the GOC, highlighting the positive impact on oil production in the region.
He emphasized the role of private security firms as force multipliers and enablers in safeguarding critical national infrastructure, as outlined in the Office of the National Security Advisor’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
Sarham also commended the infrastructural developments at the Port Harcourt barracks and urged further efforts against illegal oil sourcing in the Niger Delta region.
The meeting was attended by representatives of PINL, Project Management Office and Tatita Security Services Nigeria Limited and concluded with the distribution of souvenirs and group photographs.
