Germany and Switzerland advance to Euro quarter-finals, defending champions Italy knocked out

Germany and Switzerland both advanced to the quarter-finals of the ongoing European Championship after wins on Saturday night.

While Switzerland stunned reigning champions Italy to qualify, Germany beat Denmark following two quick goals in the second half.

Switzerland dominated from the start and managed to take the lead in the 37th minute through Remo Freuler’s low shot which went past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Ruben Vargas made it 2-0 just 27 seconds into the second half.

Italy, who beat England to win the last European Championship final, have now left the competition, with Switzerland potentially facing England in the last eight.

For hosts Germany, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz scored the goals to ensure victory over Denmark.

Play was stopped for about 20 minutes towards the end of the first half, as lightning lit up the sky and the pitch was soaked by hail and heavy rain.

Both teams then returned to the field and the match resulted in a controversial VAR decision that ultimately gave the home team victory.

Germany will next face the winner of Sunday’s match between Spain, who have been one of the best teams so far, and surprise package Georgia.
