Governor Abiodun promises relief to victims of Oba Lipede market inferno

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said chop owners at Oba Lipede International Market, Kuto, Abeokuta, who lost valuables during Saturday night’s inferno, will receive support from the state government.

Governor Abiodun made the assurance when he visited the market to ascertain the level of destruction caused by the fire.

He said that censuses will be carried out to determine the losses suffered by the market traders so that immediate relief can be provided to the affected people and ensure that they can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

He praised the state firefighters for their timely intervention, which prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the market.

“Many of our people have suffered losses; those who sell fabrics, food products, those who are tailors, those who sell dry food products, flour, bananas, plantains, sweet potatoes. But, fortunately, our firefighting team intervened in time. The emergency response system was activated.

“Everyone is on deck. So what we’re going to do is first of all enumerate the losses that have been incurred so that we can provide a cushion for them.

“It’s really unfortunate that this happened at this time, the time when most of them are struggling. So, we feel their pain and we identify with them, and I told them that they are not alone. I will not leave them alone.

“As a responsible government, we will step in and provide them with the necessary support at this time, so that they can continue to carry out their activities,” he said.

The governor said the government would review the report on the cause of the fire and assess how best to prevent its recurrence in the future.

He said he had tasked the Bureau of Electrical Services with improving the lighting at the market, which was built more than 40 years ago.
