Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum lamented on Saturday that 95 percent of the youths who participated in Thursday’s violent protests in the state were children under the age of 14.
Zulum stated this in a broadcast to the people of Borno where he also lifted the 24-hour curfew imposed in the state.
The governor on Thursday imposed a curfew after the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in the state turned violent.
He said: “More than 95 percent of those who participated in Thursday’s so-called protests were children under the age of 14. Most of them did not know why they were protesting.
“A six-year-old carrying a placard is amazing. He must have been directed by someone. Most of the children are not from Borno.
“Even if we do not hinder the education of Almajiri, we still have to ask their teachers or guardians to look after them.”

Zulum also decried the situation where thousands of children are living in Maiduguri under the name of Almajiri without any care from anyone.
“In what could have been a major disaster, bandits attempted several times to attack the Maiduguri Emergency Gas Power Plant, however, the attempts were thwarted by our gallant security forces.
“Violence has no place in our society and I appeal to citizens to reject any call to arms or commit acts of aggression.
“When we lift the curfew on Saturday, anyone involved in looting and violent activities will be dealt with accordingly.
“We have distributed food and non-food aid in Maiduguri and other local governments, increased support to farmers through the sale of fertilizers, and provided seeds and agricultural inputs to increase food production.
“We also want to invest in irrigated agriculture and livestock development,” he added.
