Group asks Governor Oborevwori to protect Delta Sports from politicians

The politicking for the exalted position of the Delta State Sports Commission is receiving more public attention due to the unsavory politics of some influential individuals, who are bent on retaining their long-standing iron grip on the fortunes of youth and sports development in the oil-rich state.

And as the public eagerly awaits the appointment of a new chairman who would steer sports affairs in the state for the next four years, the Friends of Nigeria Sports (FNS), a group of genuinely concerned sports stakeholders, have joined other influential personalities in appealing to His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to shun selfish cabal influences in making the appointment.

Speaking to sports journalists from his base in Abuja, the National Coordinator of NSF, Chief Diprieye Thompson, expressed concern over the sorry state of sports administration in Delta State.

“Since 1999, I tell you, characters like Chief Solomon Ogba and his cronies have been dictating the fortunes of sports in Delta State. Delta State is endowed with experienced and properly trained sports technocrats like Davidson Owumi, Austin Popo, Elder Kujuebola, NFF/CAF instructor Edema Fuludu, Clement Temile, Sam Okpodu, Tony Rafua and others. Unfortunately, these godfathers prefer their henchmen and cronies.

“It is a shame that there is no quality or CAF standard stadium in Delta State. Previous governments allowed these greedy and selfish politicians to kill off sports in the state.

“These people have continued to deceive past and present governors of Delta State by spending millions to attract mercenaries and win sports festivals.

“Governor Oborevwori should, as a matter of utmost importance, appoint a thoroughbred professional, who would help develop sports in the state,” Thompson added.
