The Catholic Church has elected a new Pope. It is Cardinal Rupert Prevost who took the title, Leo The XIV, the first American to be elected.
It appeared on the balcony of the Basilica of San Pietro, a few minutes after the traditional white smoke floated by the fireplace of the Sistine Chapel on Thursday.
The new Ponteff is currently keeping his first speech to the faithful massaged in the land of the Basilica and billions of others looking at the procedure on screens all over the world.
Thage reports that 133 cardinals, gathered under the frescoed ceilings of the Sistine Chapel, made a decision in the third round of votes after two inconclusive votes on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
The Papal Conclave officially began on Wednesday with a mass in the Basilica of San Pietro, chaired by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals. Giving himself to the cardinals and thousands of faithful present, Battista asked unity, faith and prayer while the Church was looking for his next spiritual leader.
The first voting rounds were unable to produce a successor by Pope Francis, who died Easter Monday at the age of 88 following a stroke. The black smoke of the chapel fireplace had previously indicated that no consent had been reached.
