Hezbollah confirmed the death of its leader in an Israeli airstrike

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli airstrike.

Nasrallah, who led the group for 32 years, was killed in an airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Friday.

In a statement on Saturday, the group said its leader was killed along with other members in what they described as a โ€œtreacherous Zionist attackโ€ on the Lebanese capital.

โ€œSayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, has joined his fellow great and immortal martyrs whom he led for some 30 years,โ€ Hezbollah said in a statement.

Israeli jets bombarded Beirut overnight and into Saturday in the most intense attack on Hezbollah’s stronghold since the group and Israel last fought in 2006.

Dozens of people were killed in the latest hostilities between the arch enemies.
