The House Committee on University Education on Saturday expressed concern over the deteriorating infrastructure in universities across the Southeast.
The parliamentarians’ concerns followed their oversight visit to federal universities in the region.
Some of the universities visited by the committee included the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nnamdi Azikwe University Awka, and Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo
The others are the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences and the Federal University of Health Sciences Umahi, Uburu, Ebonyi State.
The committee chairman, Abubakar Fulata, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja urged the university to renovate and maintain the buildings on the grounds instead of constructing new ones.

He said most of the universities the committee visited did not comply with the federal character principle.
The lawmaker described the development as a gross violation of the constitution.
He said: βThe fact that a university is located in a particular location in a country does not mean that ethnic groups or people from that location should dominate it.β
Fulata disagreed with the inconsistencies and discrepancies found in the documents submitted by several universities.
He also questioned the non-compliance with federal character principles seen in their staff rosters.
Therefore, the chairman tasked the university management to make necessary changes.
