‘I can’t stop crying’: 10 -year -old Nigerian boy devastated by the death of the Liverpool star jota

A 10 -year -old boy, Olanijesu, from Lagos, was disconsolate after the tragic death of his football hero, Diogo Jota, the Portuguese striker for Liverpool FC who died in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025.

According to the reports, the young Liverpool fan, who described Jota as “as an older brother,” began to cry and could not be comforted after listening to the news.

His parents said he had an emotional collapse when he learned that the player, who would have turned 29 in a few days, had died with his brother, André Silva, in a road accident on the A-52 road near Zamora, Spain.

Jota and his brother returned from a trip after the recent wedding of the footballer and a period of medical recovery. A tire burst caused its Lamborghini to deviate from the road and set fire. Both men were declared dead on the scene.

Obanijesu, a passionate supporter of Liverpool, said that Jota’s objectives and humility made him love the club even more. “I can’t believe it. I will continue using his shirt forever. This is the saddest day of my life,” the child told journalists, cleaning tears.

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool and was a key part of the club’s recent success Jürgen Klopp. Taxes have come from all over the world, even from Cristiano Ronaldo, Prince William, UEFA and Liverpool FC.

Obanijesu’s parents said that the child’s pain was “deeper than we imagine”, and that they are helping him deal with the loss of his soccer idol.
