Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside has expressed concerns ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho on Friday.
Peterside expressed doubts over the team’s current ability to score goals and deliver consistent performances.
“The game against Lesotho is the real problem because we didn’t score goals, we didn’t play and winning games has become a challenge,” Peterside said.
“If this had been before and we were playing Lesotho, we would confidently predict a 3-0 win. But now no one is sure. The confidence is gone and everyone knows it.”
He also talked about Benin Republic being the favorite to qualify.
“Benin has the best chance of qualifying. If they and South Africa win their matches, they will both have 17 points.
“If Benin can hold out or beat us, it won’t be a surprise. We have shown that we are beatable. If we don’t win against Lesotho, there is nothing at stake for next Tuesday because even if we beat Benin, we will only have 14 points.
“In that case, the coach may not even use his strongest team. That’s why the key is to beat Lesotho,” he stressed.
Despite their concerns, Peterside remains hopeful.
“Nigeria is not in last place. No matter who we face, we will win by the grace of God. I have a strong feeling that we will win.”

Peterside also shared his opinion on the situation with coach Eric Chelle, asking for patience.
“Football is very emotional. If you don’t win, people will scream. But let’s leave Eric Chelle for after the African Cup of Nations.
“They must at least reach the semi-finals. Forming a team is not easy, it requires time and patience.”
“If he doesn’t qualify for the World Cup but performs well in the AFCON, then he deserves the chance to continue.”
Idah Peterside earned two caps for the Nigerian national team and spent most of his club career with Moroka Swallows FC and Enyimba.
