Ilorin Photographer Loses Job After Losing $128 Bag and Equipment from Aero Contractors

Ibrahim Ibrahim, a photographer from Ilorin, lost the job he went to Kebbi State to do because his photography equipment worth $128 was lost by Aero Contractors in September.

The Ilorin-based photographer boarded a flight from Abuja to Sokoto State on September 2. He had planned to board a bus to Kebbi from Sokoto for a wedding photoshoot he had been hired to do.

Ibrahim told FIJ that he had put a Jinbei device and a tripod in a bag. The bag was checked in at the check-in area and given a tag.

At that point, he never thought anything could go wrong, but all the things Ibrahim never thought could go wrong, did go wrong.

Upon arrival in Sokoto, the bag containing his gear was nowhere to be found in the bag retrieval area.

“When we landed in Sokoto, the bag containing my equipment was nowhere to be found. I complained to the airline and they assured me that they would send it on the evening flight that day,” Ibrahim told FIJ on Tuesday.

He told FIJ that he could not wait until the evening because he had to travel from Sokoto to Kebbi by road and feared he would become the victim of attacks by bandits along the route if he left late that day.

Ibrahim’s black bag contained the tripod and the Jinbei device.

He expressed his concerns and told the airline staff member who was handling him that he would collect it on September 7 before returning to Abuja or sending someone to collect it on his behalf. However, there was no word from the airline until three days later.

“It was only three days later that I received a message from them informing me that my bag had arrived. I returned to the airport on the morning of September 7 to board a flight to Abuja,” Ibrahim said.

He expected to receive the bag containing his equipment but, to his great surprise, the airline staff only took out his tripod.

His Jinbei gear, worth $128, was nowhere to be found.

Ibrahim expressed his displeasure and told them that he had put the tripod and Jinbei equipment in a bag, but the staff member who approached him said that the luggage tag he had been given only covered the tripod.

He felt disconcerted.

“I told them it wasn’t my fault and that the staff member who registered it had typed what was written on the tag. I couldn’t ask them what it covered because I had a flight to catch,” Ibrahim said.

“I was looking forward to continue arguing with them at Sokoto airport because I had to go to Abuja. When I got to Abuja, I went to their airport booth and was told to go to the check-in area. I went there but there was no one there.”

He was told to wait for the return of the designated staff members for the check-in area, but time was a luxury he could not afford. He was due back in Ilorin the following day.

“I had to fly back to Ilorin the next day and I had other things to sort out. If I had waited, I would have missed my flight to Ilorin the next day and would have spent more money on hotel accommodation, and I might not have received my equipment,” Ibrahim lamented.

“The only equipment I have is my tripod. I haven’t been contacted since. The job I traveled for was given to someone else because I didn’t have my own equipment.”

FIJ sent an email to Aero Contractors on Tuesday, but did not receive a response.

In March, FIJ reported that Aero Contractors failed to reimburse Chukwuneku Opiti, a Lagos State resident, after he was charged N81,760 twice for a plane ticket.
