Inec cannot be blamed for Election Malpractic – Anambra Rec

The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) is not responsible for election fraud in Nigeria, according to the Commissioner of Population Election (REC) for the State of Anambra, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu.

Speaking at AWKA at the Workshop on the involvement and sensitivity of stakeholders about the protection of the mandate, Dr. Agwu rejected a widespread claim about the election fraud that was allegedly regulated by Inec, insisting that the commission did not conduct a rig election or no way to do it.

The event was held by the space of the Nigerian civil society in a partnership with the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD), and supported by foreign offices, the Commonwealth and Development of the UK (FCDO), ahead of the upcoming Anambra Governor Election scheduled on November 8.

“Inec is just a small item in the large selection process. Police, Army, Civil Defense, FRSC and others are all involved. We have officers who return to states, 21 local governments, 326 wards, and all voting booths. This is an ad hoc worker,” said Dr. AGWU.

He stressed that selection manipulation is often the result of politicians, which then diverted mistakes to Inec when their efforts failed. “On the election day, you will not see Inec officials outside. We only see the results once, when the results of all locations are arranged. Actually, the exchange of hand money during the election, and it was incited by politicians. When someone lost, they shouted that Inec had cheated them. We destroyed themselves in the name of politics,” he said.

Agwu also refers to the defects in the voter list, linking the number of low voters who are persistent with irregular entries and the existence of the name of the ghost in the past. He called for awareness of making results. “Those sitting in a place to write the results of waste because of such results will never be able to find their way to authentic results,” he warned.

Adding conversation, election consultant for CDD, Mr. Chibuike MGbeahurike, criticizing political actors and voters for damaging the integrity of the election.

“I do not know when the last time we were served with credible elections in this country. Look at Anambra: instead of telling people how they intend to serve, politicians are busy attacking each other. Even voters now say they will not vote unless they are paid, and this is because politicians fail to be sensitive,” he said.

MGbeahurike called for more intensive voter education, local campaigns, and stronger commitments to protect the election mandate.

This workshop features a strong discussion on election security, voter verification process, malpractice prevention, and the importance of monitoring transparent elections.
