INEC extends the deadline for submitting party membership lists

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to register their members for the 2027 elections.

This was disclosed by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Information and Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Haruna said instead of the April 21 deadline, political parties now have until May 10 to submit their membership lists.

According to him, the decision was taken at a commission meeting with political parties, Tuesday.

He said that the parties expressed concerns regarding the deadline for submitting lists of political party members based on the Revised Schedule and Activity Schedule for the 2027 Election.

Haruna gave an example, the KPU agreed to adjust the time period for submitting the membership list to match the 21 days specified in Article 77(4) of the 2026 Election Law.

“Therefore, political parties are informed that they are free to set the date for their primaries within the agreed timeframe, namely from April 23 to May 30. It is vital that parties adhere to this timetable to ensure the election process runs smoothly.

“The list of party members must be submitted to INEC no later than 21 days before the holding of the respective primaries.

This means that the deadline for submitting lists of political party members has been extended to May 10, from April 21 originally stated in the revised Schedule, the INEC official said.
