Inec tells Akpoti-Uduaghan about the petition to remember it from the Senate

The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) has given the deferred Kogi Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uuduaghan, regarding the acceptance of the petition to remember it from the National Assembly.

The Commission revealed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Commissioner and its National Chair, the Information Education and Voter Committee, Sam Oluumekun.

Oluumekun also confirmed that the commission had received the contact address of the applicant representatives who wanted to remember Akpoti-Uduaghan.

He said the telephone number and email address of the applicant’s representative had been given to Inec in the letter dated March 27 and addressed to the Chair of the Commission, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu.

He said: “As specified in clause 2 (a) the rules and guidelines of the commission for recall 2024, a letter has been written to tell the senator who wants to be called back about the receipt of the petition and sent to the official address.

“The same letter has been copied to the chairman of the Senate and published on the commission website.

“The next step is to examine the signing list submitted by the applicants to ensure that the petition was signed by more than half (more than 50 percent) of voters registered in the electoral district.

“This will be done in the coming days. The result, which will be published, will determine the next step that will be taken by the commission.”

Olumekun assured Nigerians that the withdrawal process would be open and transparent.

A group of voters registered from the Kogi Central Senatorial District on Monday submitted a petition to Inec and urged the commission to start the process of withdrawing Akpoti-Uuduaghan.

Constituents, in a letter signed by the main applicant, Salihu Habib, said they no longer had trust in Akpoti-Uuduaghan as their senators and representatives in the National Assembly.

Inec on Tuesday, confirmed the receipt of the petition, accompanied by six document bags that were said to be a signature collected from more than half of 474,554 voters registered from the Senator District.
