Iner commits the National Assembly to the electoral reforms key to rapid-thage tracking

By Victor Osula, Abuja

The president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said that the Commission is actively working with the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of the main electoral reforms in view of the general elections of 2027.

Speaking in Abuja while receiving a mission of electoral observation follow-up of the European Union at the commission headquarters, Professor Yakubu said that the commitments included a recent retreat with the joint committee on electoral issues.

He underlined that the timely conclusion of legislative reforms is fundamental, since the Incen cannot finalize the electoral guidelines or start training officials without a clear legal framework.

The visit of the EU delegation is part of the efforts to monitor the implementation of the recommendations from the general elections of 2023.

Professor Yakubu observed that the EU electoral observation mission formulated 830 recommendations, with only 4.8 percent that required actions directed by INCC. The rest, he said, is part of the responsibilities of other interested parties.

The President of the Inc said that the Commission examined the recommendations and ranked them in administrative actions, collaboration with the interested parties and legislative measures. He added that they were also considered inputs of other groups of national and international observers, resulting in a consolidated report containing over 140 proposals for the electoral reform.

Yakubu reiterated the commitment of the Inc for the transparency and continuous improvement of the electoral process.

“The Commission is looking forward to welcoming international observers, including the EU, the African Union and the Commonwealth, during the general elections of 2027,” he said.

In his observations, the leader of the EU delegation, Barrett Andrews, said that the union saw real progress from their last mission in 2023, in particular in judicial, administrative and constitutional reforms, adding that Nigeria is making efforts to act on the recommendations that have previously shared.
