The IGBO separatist group that was prohibited, the native of Biafra (IPOB), had condemned the ongoing secret trial from its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court, Abuja, which was described as unconstitutional.
The Pro-BIFRA group that raised observations in a statement issued by the Secretary of the Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful on Thursday, which demanded full public access to the Kanu trial, noted that court decisions to limit media coverage and limiting public access were insulting the principles of democracy and Judicial Nigeria.
Strong further accusing the trial and especially the trial judge, judge James Omotosho, because of the involvement in the trial which according to him was intended to silence the Kanu and protect government violations from public supervision.
The group also criticized the main prosecutor, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), for allegedly regulating media outages and accusing the court of providing sanctions for blocking information.
Ipob also claimed that carrying out the trial of its leader in secret was the effort of the Nigerian government to avoid public supervision after a recent cross-examination from the main prosecution witness, who was identified as PW-BB, who allegedly revealed the inconsistency and trained the falsehood.
“The native people of Biafra (IPOB) under the leadership of our leaders who are persistent in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in categorizing the process of planting media and the unconscious Klandestin trial currently occurred at the Federal High Court in Abuja, led by Judge Omotosho,” the statement was read.
“The Nigerian constitution, based on section 36 (3), is firm: all criminal trials must be held in public. Therefore it is a terrible violation of the spirit and constitutional letter to carry out the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu trial in the hospitality.
“We remind Judge Omotosho and the legal community that justice must not only be carried out but must be seen to be done. The court cannot allow himself to be a tool that is willing in the hands of the prosecution that has been, for years, armed the media to vilify his own driving Mazi Nnamdi and wrong in the placement of the law of Mazi.
“After years of spending billions – if not trillions – from Naira for propaganda and media persuasion both at home and abroad, the Nigerian state is now hiding under the cover of” direct news blackouts “worn by the prosecution, led by Awomolo, and shameful agreed by the court. Nigerian public and the international community.
“Cross-examination recently from the so-called” star witness, “PW-BB-whose answers were filled with” I do not know, “inconsistency, and training falsity-after clearly shaking the country.
“Therefore we make the following demands: Direct streaming of all processes in the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu trial to ensure transparency and restore public confidence in the judicial process.
“Access is not limited to court processes for cross-sectional media independent, non-partisan media organizations, including international observers.
“The end of the report that is biased and manipulated by a compromised media outlet that only publishes the narrative of prosecution while ignoring or distorting defense facts.
“This case is not only about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This is about the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary, the sanctity of the constitution, and the rights of every citizen of a just and public trial. The Nigerian state cannot be permitted to carry out high political trials under the confidential robe while pretending to comply with legal regulations.
“For those who oppose transparency, we say: the guilty is always afraid of light. If you are sure of your case, open the door of the courtroom and let the truth be heard by everyone. The world is watching.”
