The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Wednesday warned politicians in the Southeastern region of Biafra against sabotaging ongoing efforts to secure the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The separatist group in a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful alleged that some politicians visited the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, to persuade him not to support the bid to release Kanu from detention.
IPOB warned those sabotaging Kanu’s release to know that IPOB is aware of their secret meetings and discussions against Kanu and threatened to publish their names if they fail to refrain from such actions.
The statement read: “If they continue with their sabotage, their names will soon be made public. Also, some people working in politics in the South-East who are against the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should know that we are following their activities closely.
“Unscrupulous individuals held secret meetings with Governors in the South-East to thwart calls for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who happens to be the only political prisoner in Nigeria currently.
“We warn those who are sabotaging the unconditional release of our leaders to stop provoking IPOB. The saboteurs should know that nothing will happen in the Southeast without IPOB getting the information first.

“The Igbo people involved in this heinous act to thwart the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must immediately retract their steps. IPOB-ESN is not asking them to desist, but they must be prepared to face the consequences of their opposition actions.
“IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has not committed any crime known to international or local law. He was illegally detained for over 3 years by the Nigerian government after being kidnapped in Kenya and transferred to Nigeria unlawfully in violation of international extradition laws.
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a gross violation of the Court of Appeal judgment and a slap in the face of Ndigbo as a race.”
“The continued illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a discrimination against the Ndigbo people. The Nigerian government has dropped cases and charges against political prisoners from other ethnic groups but only detains Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because he is an Igbo. Doesn’t that mean the Ndigbo people mean nothing in Nigeria?”
“The unscrupulous politicians from the South East who are sabotaging the release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu are not only working against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu but are also sabotaging Ndigbo as a whole,” the statement added.
Kanu is on trial for treason and other related charges at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Leaders from the South-East region, including federal lawmakers are currently pushing for Kanu’s release in a bid to restore normalcy to the South-East region.
Governors of the five states in the region met on Tuesday in Enugu and resolved to meet with the Federal Government in the coming days to find a political solution to Kanu’s case.
