Five journalists from Al Jazeera were among seven people killed in an Israeli air attack on Gaza on Sunday evening, according to the net.
The victims included a prominent correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, who had reported from the inside of Gaza since the conflict started in October 2023. Other killed were corresponding comrades Mohammed Qreiqeh and three operators of cameras-Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa.
The Israeli forces subsequently claimed the responsibility of the strike, accusing Al-Sharif of being a senior member of the Hamas terrorist organization who placed as a journalist. They claimed to drive a Hamas cell and coordinate missile attacks against Israeli civilians and troops.
Al Jazeera rejected the Israeli statements, describing Al-Sharif as an accredited journalist and “the only voice” that documents the events in Gaza for the global public. The network said that journalists were targeted in their tent and not close to the lines.
Since the war began, Israel has forbidden foreign media from the entrance freely in Gaza, forcing international stores to rely on local journalists.
The committee to protect journalists (CPJ) said that Al-Sharif had been at high risk, warning last month that it was a source of key news for the global public. CPJ reports that 186 journalists have been killed in Gaza since 2023.
At Jazeera, the Israeli soldiers accused of conducting a prolonged campaign against his journalists, calling him “a dangerous attempt to justify the targeting of media workers”.
Before his death, Al-Sharif published on X (previously Twitter) that there was “non-stop bombings” in his area. A pre-scripted declaration subsequently published by his account recites:
“This is my last will and my testament. If these words of mine reach you, know that Israel has managed to kill me and silence my voice. Don’t forget Gaza … and don’t forget in your prayers.”
