Iyabo Obasanjo To critics: I am not in a beauty pageant, judge me on competence

Former Senator, Iyabo Olusola Obasanjo, has dismissed criticism over her appearance, insisting that competence and ability, not aesthetics, should define her governorship ambition ahead of the 2027 elections in Ogun Stat..

Obasanjo, who spoke during a radio interview on Paramount 94.5 FM in Abeokuta, said the comments on his fashion choices were out of place and irrelevant to governance.

“I am not entering a beauty pageant. My fashion sense will not ensure good governance, but my skills, experience and expertise will,” she said.

The former lawmaker stressed that her aspiration to lead the state was driven by a desire to provide focused leadership and institutional reforms, urging the public to evaluate her based on her track record and vision rather than superficial considerations.

Describing the governorship race as a serious undertaking, Obasanjo said it requires intellectual depth, administrative capacity and a clear development agenda.

In addition to addressing criticism, the aspirant outlined his political priorities, with a strong focus on education. He called for improved welfare, training and motivation for teachers, describing them as key drivers of national development.

He also highlighted the role of National Youth Service Corps members in supporting the education sector, especially those assigned to schools, and called for greater support for them.

Obasanjo also advocated for greater investment in entrepreneurship and vocational training, stressing that equipping young people with practical skills is essential to tackling unemployment and boosting economic growth.

He added that more attention also needs to be paid to key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture and business development to ensure inclusive growth across the State.

His remarks come against the backdrop of increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State, with stakeholders projecting fierce competition between aspirants positioning themselves on issues of governance, development and economic transformation.
