Jane laments the poor Wafcon 2024 campaign from Banyana

Banyana Banyana, from South Africa’s captain, Review Jane, said she and her teammates are disappointed with their final results in the Caf Women Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) 2024, where they ended in fourth place.

Banyana Banyana was promoted to third place by Ghana 4-3 with penalties after the two nations drawn 1-1 during Friday’s regulation time.

Linda Motlhalo, Bambanani Mbane and Jermaine Seoposenwe turned their kicks into the spot while Sibulele Holweni and Hilda Magaia saved their shots through the archera of Ghana Cynthia Fiindid Konlan.

This is the first time in three editions of this tournament that Banyana Banyana could not do the podium. In 2018 they claimed money and then took gold in 2022.

“Obviously, we are disappointed to go home empty -handed,” Jame was summoned on the Safa website. “Throughout the tournament it was not easy for players, and there were many challenges inside and outside the field. But we tried to perform a great performance, we tried to make our best level and try to retain the trophy as the main objective.

“But going home now there is still no job to do and we hope that the next Wafcon comes, which is very important, it is a World Cup classification tournament, we hope we can do well. But first we have to do it well in the qualifiers,” said Jane, who played the six games in the tournament.

The midfielder said that the team is going through a transition and that many changes can be expected.

“Given the situation within the camp, given the players we had and a lot of transition that was taking place in the team, we hope that many positive aspects of this tournament can be taken and build on that,” Jane added.

Ghana’s clash in the third and fourth playoff was the final match for Seoposenwe in the ColoraciΓ³n National Team after 112 appearances.

He announced his retirement shortly before the start of the Wafcon and Jane gave her praise.

“Jermaine has been a key figure in the national team, since she was a teenager so far calling retirement. We know how much contribution she has given the team inside and outside the countryside, leaves a great legacy, one that must be followed by the next adolescents or the next players than the next ones.

On Monday night the Banyana Banyana team is expected to return home in South Africa.
