JOHESU condemns prolonged kidnapping of National Eye Center applicants

The Joint Health Sector Workers Union and Assembly of Health Professionals Associations (JOHESU/AHPA) on Saturday condemned the prolonged kidnapping of a Registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.

Popoola was kidnapped with her husband by armed men suspected of being bandits on December 27, 2023.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Kabir Minjibir and National Secretary, Martin Egbanubi, the union lamented that the incident highlighted the vulnerability of healthcare workers across the country.

He stressed that the ongoing kidnappings were undermining the provision of health services to citizens.

JOHESU/AHPA described the trend as “dangerous” and demanded emergency action from security agencies.

The union expressed solidarity with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on its seven-day warning strike that began on August 26 in response to the kidnapping of their colleagues.

He urged the Federal Government and state authorities to mobilize security agencies to secure the release of Popoola and others held hostage by bandits across the country.
