Jumia Reaffirms Commitment to Consumer Trust on World Consumer Rights Day

Jumia Nigeria has highlighted its comprehensive approach to protecting consumers from counterfeit or adulterated products on its marketplace

Jumia Group Head of Content and Production, Peters Afebuame, disclosed this while speaking at a high-level panel session as the global community commemorates World Consumer Rights Day.

The company, joining industry leaders, regulators and consumer advocates at a high-level panel session hosted by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), said the company has implemented structured controls and technology-based systems throughout the entire product lifecycle, from seller onboarding to post-listing monitoring, to safeguard the authenticity of the product.

He said: “Ensuring product authenticity on our platform requires a combination of technology, policy enforcement and ongoing seller involvement.

“At Jumia Nigeria, we have implemented a multi-layered process that begins with rigorous seller onboarding and policy agreements, followed by catalog configuration checks, AI-based product attribute verification and the use of global product identification standards.

“These systems are strengthened by ongoing quality moderation, brand protection mechanisms and rigorous enforcement actions, including deletion of products and sellers, ensuring that customers can shop on our platform with confidence.”

At the heart of Jumia’s consumer protection framework is a rigorous seller verification process designed to ensure the integrity of the marketplace. Suppliers are required to provide evidence of legal and regulatory compliance before accessing the platform.

“This verification process is strengthened by a rigorous quality control system that monitors products listed on the platform, supported by a zero-tolerance policy towards counterfeit or substandard goods. Non-compliant sellers face fines and permanent delisting from the marketplace.”
