Kano floods kill 31, 5,280 homes destroyed

The Kano State government has confirmed 31 people have died in the recent floods across 21 local government areas of the state.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Isyaku Kubarachi disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday in Kano.

He said 280 people were affected and 5,280 houses were destroyed by the floods.

Kubarachi added that 2,518 farmlands covering 976 hectares were washed away in the incidents that followed heavy rains in Wudil, Gwale, Nassarawa, Dala, Tarauni, Dawakin-Tofa, Dambatta and other LGAs.

He said: “The local government has taken proactive measures, including clearing blocked drains and clearing debris to ensure smooth water flow during the rainy season.

“In addition, SEMA and NEMA have assessed the damage in the affected areas and forwarded the necessary data to the government for necessary assistance.

“The state government is working to provide assistance to all 21 local government areas affected by the floods and hopes to see positive results soon.”
