“Keeper Rufai”, “The Mystic”, “Dodo Mayana” – NFF, Ahmed Musa, Atiku Abubakar, Fans, others cry while Peter Rufai dies

The Nigerian soccer community has been thrown into a deep duel after the death of the legendary goalkeeper of Super Eagles Peter Rafai, known with love as “Dodo Mayana”.

The iconic shooting shot died in Lagos on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a brief disease.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the death of the 61 -year -old woman in an official statement, describing the news as a devastating blow to the National Soccer Heritage.

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, general secretary of the NFF, expressed his pain:

“This is very, very shocking. I am perplexed. God bless his soul”

Peter Rufai was the first Nigerian goalkeeper to play in the FIFA World Cup, which appeared prominently in the US tournament. His athletics, leadership and charisma made him a worship hero among fans, and his name became synonymous with excellence in the goal in Nigeria.

The current Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, joined the effusion of tributes:

“I cannot believe that he is writing this: a publication to say goodbye to a true Nigerian football giant, Peter Rafai. His heroic reflexes and his unwavering presence among the publications brought us pride on the world stage.

The greatest personality than Rufai’s life, acrobatic salvations and the iconic nickname, “Mayana Dodo”, said his place in Nigerian folklore. It is still a symbol of the golden era of Nigerian football.

His wife and children survive him. The family will announce funeral arrangements in due time.
