A man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador by the Trump government was returned to the US to face criminal demands.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia was charged in the indictment submitted in a federal court in Tennessee by conspiring to transport illegal immigrants to the US, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday.
Court records have shown that the indictment was submitted on May 21, more than two months after he was deported from the US under the controversial 18th century war law.
Appearing in court on Friday at Nashville, Tennessee, Abrego Garcia was asked if he understood the accusation.
He told the judge: “Sí. Lo Entiendo.” A translator then said: “Yes. I understand.”
He will be detained until at least next Friday, when there will be an indictment and detention hearing, the judge decides.
Lawyer Abrego Garcia said the accusation was “unreasonable”.
One of his lawyers, Andrew Rossman, said that now it would depend on the US justice system to ensure he accepted the legal process.
“Today’s action proves what we have known so far – that the government has the ability to bring it back and only refuse to do it,” he said.

The indictment accused Abrego Garcia of working with at least five conspirators of bringing immigrants to the US illegally and transporting them from the border to other goals in the country.

On Friday, MS Bondi outlines the accusation at a press conference, saying: “Grand Jury found that for the past nine years, Abrego Garcia had played an important role in an alien smuggling ring.
“He did more than 100 trips, the jury found -smuggling people throughout the country … MS -13 [international criminal gang] Members, members of the terrorist organization gang violence … throughout our country.
“He will be prosecuted in our country, punished in our country if punished and then return after completing his sentence.”
Bondi said President Salvador Nayib Bunkele agreed to return Abrego Garcia to the US after American officials gave an arrest warrant to his government.

Officials responded by accusing that Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS -13 gang – something rejected by his lawyers.
In a separate statement, MS Bondi also attacked what he called “fake news media” and repeated accusations – but not yet proven – against Abrego Garcia.
“The judges ‘judges’ charge of the Justice of Abrego Garcia proved that the unrestriced Democratic Party was wrong, and their stenographer in fake news media was once again played like a fool.
“Abrego Garcia has never been a ‘Maryland Man’ Garcia Abrego Garcia is an illegal alien terrorist, gang members, and human traders who have spent all of their lives abusing innocent people, especially women and the most vulnerable.”
