The Labor Party has distanced itself from the 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his new involvement in the coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party confirmed that they did not support candidates for the presidency and would not offer automatic tickets to anyone.
In a statement released on Monday by the Secretary of the National Publicity, Obiora Ifoh, the party criticized the new media report that suggested they celebrated the Declaration of Obi which was recognized to fight under their banners in the next election.
“The attention of the leadership of the Labor Party has been interested in the news trend in the media that the party was ‘celebrating’ that his candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi had expressed his intention to run for the party platform in 2027,” Ifoh stated.
“I want to decisively declare that I was quoted outside the context and therefore, the impression conveyed by the news was wrong, inaccurate and in any way did not reflect the position and mood in the party.”
While recognizing that Obi or other interested individuals are invited to compete on the LP platform, if it is clear that aspiration must follow the process constitutionally determined by the party.

“The Labor Party has old rules on how the candidates will appear and automatic tickets are not one route,” he added.
The party referred to the 2024 National Convention, where tickets were automatically given to Obi and the Governor of the State of Abia, Alex Otti.
The decision, he said, had been reversed after consulting with the party’s constitutional framework.
LP also expressed concern over Obi’s presence at a coalition meeting held on Sunday in Abuja, which, according to the statement, occurred without the party’s knowledge or approval.
The party found this action “confusing” and reflected the lack of clarity about Obi’s intention for 2027.
“This is for us really confusing and we think that Peter Obi has not received his intention to the 2027 Presidential Race,” the statement said. Further emphasizing that Obi’s relationship with the Proalisi group is “unpleasant” and “unacceptable.”
