Lafarge Africa Autowers 17 Truck drivers through women initiatives

Lafarge Africa Plc has strengthened its commitment for gender inclusion with the degree of 17 women’s truck drivers in the context of its women’s initiative (WOW).

The degree ceremony, held on Wednesday at the Lafarge Driving Institute in Ewekoro, in the state of Ogun, marks another milestone in the company’s efforts to encourage diversity in the Nigeria transport and logistics sector.

The event attracted the main parties concerned, including government officials, representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (Frsc) and the sector leader.

Speaking at the ceremony, the CEO and the CEO of the Lafarge Africa group, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, described the program as a turning point in the logistical sector.

β€œIn Lafarge Africa, we constantly invest in critical areas that will allow women to thrive.

“The Women-on-Wheels program successfully integrated the certified truck drivers in our logistical value chain,” Alade-Akinyemi said.

The logistical director of Lafarge Africa, Osaze AGhatis, has highlighted the wider impact of the initiative, observing that it promotes gender equality and guarantees a safe and efficient road transport.

“With every lot of drivers we train, we are expanding the opportunities for women and improving road safety in Nigeria,” he said.

The Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and the Social Development of the State of Ogun, the honorable Adijat Adeleye-Dapao, praised the initiative as a significant step towards economic empowerment and gender equality.

In the same way, the commissioner for industry, trade and investments, Adebola Sofela, represented by the director of geological services, Olalekan Eniolawun, praised Lafarge Africa for opening new opportunities for women in the logistics sector.

The commander of the federal sector of the road safety body, Akinwumi Fasakin, praised graduates for their resilience and commitment.

He has described them as role models that will inspire more women to take careers in transport.

Among the graduates, Shotayo Olajumoke, ADIBE Favor and Yaya Rukayat Olabisi have been recognized as the most performing trainees.

By expressing his excitement, Adibe said: “This opportunity has transformed my life. I am proud to be part of this pioneering initiative, showing that women can thrive in the transport sector”.

Since its launch in 2019, the Women-on-Wheels program has formed and certified over 100 truck drivers.

With 36 driving women currently in the Lafarge workforce, the initiative continues to break the barriers.

30 other women graduate from the Calabar Training Center in April, further advancing gender diversity in the sector.
