The chief judge of the state of Lagos, Hon. Judge Kazeem Hlarewaju Aloogba inaugurated two panels of the appeal court to manage the petitions deriving from the newly confused local government elections, with a severe warning that any decision taken outside the established legal period of time would be nothing.
The inauguration, which took place in the conference room of the high court of Ikeja, marks the promptness of the judiciary to quickly judge the electoral disputes and safeguard the integrity of the polls of the Council held throughout the state on Saturday.
The Judge Alogba announced the establishment of two divisions of the Court – one each on the island of Lagos and Ikeja – both chaired by judges of the retired high court and including expert magistrates.
Platform Times reports that judge Taofikat Oyekan-Abdullahi (RTD) will guide the division of the island of Lagos, with the magistrates Micral Olubi, Olaitan Ajayi, Salamah Matepo and Hotpo Lazarus who act as members.
The Ikeja division is chaired by judge Sherifah Solebo (RTD), together with the magistrates Davies Rasak, Oluwatosin Fowowe-Erusiafe, Adepeju Odusanya and Lynda Balogun.
Speaking during the inauguration, the judge Alogba urged the members of the Court to approach their task with impartiality, diligence and rigorous adherence to the legal provisions, in particular those outlined in the 2016 amendment to the Law of Lagos State Government.
“Any decision or action taken outside the legally prescribed time limit is a nullity and without any legal effect,” the chief judge warned.
“You have to act strictly within the vision of the law. The trust I have in your character, experience and sense of judgment has informed your appointment.”
He underlined that their ability to guarantee justice without fear or favor would be fundamental to maintain the trust of the public in the electoral process.
Speaking also to the event, the Prosecutor General and the Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, San, described the appointment as a call to the national duty in defense of democracy and justice.
“This is not only a legal duty, but a moral obligation towards the state and humanity,” said Pedro.
“You should guarantee credibility in the electoral process by eliminating any perception that the courts are used to determine the winners outside the will of people.”
The time of the platform met that the panels must start sitting immediately, while political parties and candidates are preparing to challenge the results of the elections in various areas of the local government and areas of development of the local council.
