Lagos completed a report on illegal buildings on Pisang Island, promising immediate publication

The Lagos state government has completed its assessment report on illegal buildings on Pisang Island which is marked for demolition and is preparing to release it to the public immediately.

This was announced on Monday by Olajide Babatunde, a special advisor to the Governor of E-GI and Urban Development, during the press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the second year of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Governor in his second term.

Babatunde revealed that at least 349 unsafe structures were destroyed in the past year to protect life and property.

Previously, the government had stated its intention to destroy buildings on banana island which did not have appropriate approval or built in limited zones such as coastline areas or under electric channels. This step has caused concern between residents and property owners in the area, who since then requested government intervention.

Speaking of this issue, Babatunde said that under the leadership of the OKI Gbolahan, the Lagos State Building Control Agency had issued a notification of demolition and asked the property owner to submit their building documents for verification.

“This action reflects the commitment of government companies to enforce urban planning laws, protect public safety, and maintain the structural integrity of the plantation,” said Babatunde.

He also confirmed that the affected property owner had been invited for discussion and was given the opportunity to regulate their building approval, adding that the verification process was now complete.

“This training report is ready, and the government will immediately issue it in public before taking further action,” he added.

The agency has also carried out similar demolition of illegal buildings in other regions such as Abule Egba, Iyana-Abi, and Iyana Isheri, where most structures are established under electric channels that violate urban safety regulations.

Babatunde further revealed that 39 properties have been reclaimed by the government since 2021.
