Lagos cracks down on criminal enclaves by arresting suspects

A dramatic enforcement operation by the Lagos State Task Force turned chaotic on Thursday as suspected thugs and street urchins set fire to sections of the Fagba railway corridor in a desperate bid to evade arrest.

This was contained in a statement on Friday by the Director of Public Affairs, Task Force, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, who said the incident, which occurred during an early morning raid, highlights the growing desperation of criminal elements as authorities step up efforts to reclaim public spaces in Lagos.

The rail corridor, long identified as a hotspot for crime, has reportedly hosted a variety of illicit activities including robberies, rape, sectarianism, drug trafficking and the operation of illegal brothels allegedly involving underage girls.

The area has also witnessed repeated attacks on moving trains, with passengers pelted with stones by hooligans.

Acting on intelligence and sustained complaints, the task force led by its Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, launched a coordinated clean-up exercise spanning Alfa Nla, Okekoto, Pen Cinema in Agege axis and the troubled Fagba corridor.

However, what began as a routine enforcement quickly escalated when the thugs resisted arrest, setting parts of the corridor on fire.

The fire threatened nearby structures, including the Sunbeth petrol station and a Zenith Bank branch, raising fears of wider destruction.

The rapid intervention of the Task Force officers, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, brought the inferno under control, preventing further damage and restoring calm to the area.

Several suspects were arrested in connection with the arson and other criminal activity. Authorities have confirmed that all those arrested will be prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Protection and Management Act 2017.

Reacting to the incident, CSP Akerele issued a stern warning to youths engaging in illegal acts, stating: “Crime is not a career. We urge youths to channel their energies into productive and legitimate activities.”

The operation marks the third major clean-up exercise in Fagba axis this year, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance approach to criminal hideouts and its determination to ensure the safety of residents.
