The Lagos state government has rejected claims that show that the city is “smelly,” and registered sustainable efforts to create a cleaner, more resilient, and livable environment.
The government's statement followed a comment by a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ushie Uguamaye, about the current state of Lagos.
Raye in a video posted on Tiktok depicts Nigeria's commercial nerve center as “a city of smell.”
But the State Commissioner for environmental and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry, Kunle Adeshina, described Lagos as a megacity that developed rapidly with structured environmental solutions in place.
He reiterated the government's commitment to strategic environmental reforms in the state.

Wahab said: “Lagos does not 'smell'; this develops – becomes a continuous waste processing, managing modernized waste disposal sites, cleaner waterways, and structured sanitation systems.”
He stressed that the government of the Governor of Babajide Sanwo-Olu remained unwavering in his dedication to environmental sustainability.
“The challenges of waste and sanitation in megacity such as lagos require structural solutions, not healthy bites or political rhetoric.
“We have mobilized more than 50 air quality monitors in all states to ensure continuous assessment and control of pollutants that affect our environment,” he added.
