The state government of Lagos has imposed psychiatric evaluations for 18 motorists captured to drive against traffic (unidirectional) as part of its renewed efforts to enforce road discipline and improve public safety.
This directive was issued by the general manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (Lastma), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in a declaration issued on Sunday by the director of public affairs and the enlightenment of the agency, Taofiq Adebayo.
Bakare-Oki described the move as a strategic and rehabilitation measure to face the growing incidence of the reckless guide, in particular one-way violations, which continue to involve serious risks for life and road infrastructures in the state.
He said that the offenders, recently arrested to deliberately violate the flow of traffic, will be immediately staged and subjected to a compulsory psychiatric evaluation to determine their cognitive and behavioral suitability for the use of the road.
“Psychiatric tests do not aim to stigmatize or punish, but to serve as a preventive and corrective intervention in line with the best global practices in traffic psychology,” he explained.
He stressed that, despite the continuous awareness campaigns, many motorists still ignore traffic standards, leading to accidents, congestion and road damage.
Lasti, he observed, remains committed to supporting the rule of law, promoting road safety and maintaining order on the roads of Lagos. The agency invited all road users to obey traffic rules and contribute to creating a safer and healthier automotive environment throughout the state.
