Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerian opposition parties to leave constant criticism and focus on rebuilding internal cohesion if they intend to cause serious challenges in the upcoming elections.
Speaking on Friday during Commissioning the new hand service path that was just built in Abuja, Akpabio discussed the state of severe opposition, especially the Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labor Party (LP), both of which had been disturbed by internal disputes and legal disputes.
The event was attended by several supporters of PDP, including former Governor of Enugu Ifeiri Uguuanyi and former Governor Ekiti Ayo Fayose.
The echoing sentiment revealed by the President of Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his speech in Democracy in the National Assembly on the previous day, Akpabio stated that the decision of all the progressive congress (APC) was not active in working to eliminate the sound of opposition but could not be expected to improve their dysfunction as well.
“As the President said, he did not want a country for Nigeria. He prayed that the opposition would implement their homes,” Akpabio said. “Try and collect your home before the next election so that no one will accuse anyone of trying to hold the opposition.”

He added sharply, “But if you expect me, as a presidential representative and as president of the senate, to lead your problem and unite it, I will not do that.”
Akpabio criticized what he described as an opposition strategy to condemn the government blanket, on the grounds that such negativity eroded their own credibility. “You will never gather together when you continue to lie every day and when you criticize everything. Nothing is good in your country? Is Nigeria like this in 1960? Is Abuja like this three years ago?” He asked rhetorically.
His comments followed the similar made by the President of Bola Tinubu who while giving a state speech before the National Assembly on June 12 said to the opposition that he could not be expected to demean the crisis in the opposition camps, or expected to help improve it.
The commentary of the Senate President arrived when the political opposition in Nigeria was under visible pressure. PDP continues to wrestle with unresolved leadership disputes and court battles, while labor parties are also ensnared in legal conflicts over their national executive.
This internal crisis has made it difficult for one of the parties to function as a cohesive and credible alternative for APC.
In recent months, two PDP governors, Sheriff Oborevwori from Delta State and Umo Eno from Akwa Ibom, have defected to APC, signifying the shift of political loyalty that increasingly weaken the position of opposition.
