The Caucus of the Labor Party (LP) on the House of Representatives and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Saturday, strongly condemned this new comment made by the Governor of the State Edo, the Monday Senator on Okpebholo, where he allegedly threatened the safety of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate from the labor party.
The Governor of Okpebholo, when speaking at a political event in the state of Edo during the weekend, has reportedly stated that the safety of Peter Obi in the state cannot be guaranteed if he visits without asking permission from the governor.
The statement, which triggered widespread criticism, came during the defense ceremony for Hon. Marcus Onobun, a member of the House of Representatives who was reported to have been threatened with the demolition of his property by the same governor.
In a statement issued at Awka and signed by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the leader of the Labor Party Caucus in the House of Representatives, Members of Parliament described the Governor’s comments as “outrageous, disrespectful, inappropriate, and inappropriate for a public official.”
“The philanthropic effort of Peter Obi nationally realizes humanity and empathy for the people, beyond political affiliation, ethnicity, and other divisions,” said Caucus LP. “Instead of being slandered or incited, he must be praised for supporting the development of human resources in this country.”
MPs warned that the rhetoric of the Governor of Okpebholo became a dangerous precedent, encouraging political intolerance and eroding democratic values. They further urged Ball President Ahmed Tinubu to call Governor Edo to order and warn that damage to Peter Obi, either in Nigeria or abroad, will not be tolerated.

“How do we fight violence in the country, if, as leaders, we openly encourage intolerance, imitation, and anti-democratic tendencies as exhibited by the Governor of the State Edo?” The statement was asked.
The caucus also raised concerns about the political climate in the state of Edo, describing Okpebholo’s behavior as reflecting “the culture of coercion and inciteable incitement,” specifically quoting his alleged threats to Hon. Onobun, who then defected to the Governor’s political party.
In related developments, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also condemned the statement of the Governor of Okpebholo, calling them “embarrassing and unusual.” In a statement posted on the X Social Media Platform, the Secretary of the ADC National Publicity, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated that Peter Obi, as a Nigerian citizen, did not require the governor’s permission to visit any part of the country.
“The state of Edo is the state of Nigeria. Obi is a free citizen and does not require the governor’s permission to visit Nigerians in their own country,” Abdullahi said.
He went further to describe the Governor’s reaction to Obi’s visit and simple philanthropic contribution as evidence of poor insecurity and leadership. “When a governor panicked over a simple visit and a simple contribution, it was a clear sign that there was something wrong in a place,” he said.
