A high state court of Borno sitting in Maiduguri condemned controversial activist, Aisha Alkali Wakil, popularly known as Mama Boko Haram, for another 14 years of imprisonment for a contractual scam of N11 million.
Wakil, together with Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode, was sentenced on Wednesday by justice Aisha Kumaliya, who found them guilty of two conspiracy counts and obtaining money with false claims.
The trio, which operated in the context of the non -governmental organization complete with care and help, was initially accused on September 14, 2020 by the Zonal Directorate of Maiduguri of the Commission for economic and financial crimes (EFCC).
According to the EFCC, the defendants fraudulently obtained n11 million from a Muhammed Ambare, on the pretext of performing a bogus contract for the supply and installation of two X -ray machines (model 1800).
The court felt that the transaction took place in July 2018 and the contract was never reached. The accusation revealed that the money was transferred to a third party account belonging to Saidu Mukhtar, which remains free.
Although he declared himself not guilty, the court proceeded to a complete process, during which the EFCC called a witness and offered documentary evidence to establish the fraudulent transaction.
In his sentence, Judge Kumaliya delivered to each defendant seven years for each count to run simultaneously and ordered that the prisoners are jointly refunded N8 million to the victim or have served seven years.
The judgment marks yet another fall from grace for Wakil, who had previously enjoyed the attention of the public for saying that he had access to the insurgents of Boko Haram. However, his last years have been spoiled by more cases of fraud.
In November 2024, Wakil was sentenced to five years of imprisonment in another case that involves a fraud of N6 million. In this case, she was deemed guilty of attracting a businessman to deliver a Toyota Camry with the claim of a false contract.
The FCC spokesman claim that the agency remains committed to ensuring that scammers, regardless of their social status or public image, are brought to justice.
