The political landscape in Enugu State is set for a major upheaval as Governor Peter Mbah prepares to lead the entire political structure of the state – including 24 members of the State House of Assembly and 260 councilors – into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The planned defection, described by insiders as the “death knell” of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu, will see the governor formally declare his support for the ruling party on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Enugu APC caretaker committee in Abuja on Friday, the caretaker chairman of the party, Dr Ben Nwoye, said the defection would mark the end of the 25-year rule of the PDP in the state.
“Political evangelism has begun. We went to the governor and he agreed to move with us into the APC. He will not come alone; he will come with the entire structure of Enugu PDP,”
Nwoye said to a cheering crowd.
He said Mbah would be accompanied by members of the PDP state executive committee, National Assembly members from the state and all local government chairmen and councilors.
Analysts say the defection could trigger one of the most significant political realignments in the southeast since 1999, potentially giving the APC a strong foothold in a region long dominated by opposition parties.
Inaugurating the interim committee, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda urged the new leadership to consolidate the expected wave of defections into a lasting political transformation.
“APC is the home for everyone. The person who arrived yesterday, today or tomorrow has equal rights. Our goal is simple: expand, win and achieve a landslide victory in 2027,”
Yilwatda said.
The party’s national vice president (South), Emma Eneukwu, hailed the impending defection as a turning point for the region.
“We will no longer be in the background. With Enugu in the APC, the South East has found its voice again,” he said.
Party insiders have hinted that the move could decimate the PDP’s influence in the south-east, trigger similar defections in Anambra and Abia states and position the APC as the dominant political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Where Enugu goes, the South East goes,” Nwoye added.
“Governor Mbah has transformed Enugu in two years. Now, he will anchor the agenda of the APC’s renewed hope in the South East.”
